Chiropractic is NOT an overnight miracle treatment for your pain. Chiropractic is a natural, hands-on approach to health care which assists the body in its natural healing ability. It is based on scientific evidence that your nerves control every cell, tissue and organ in your body. Messages are sent to and from your brain through your spinal cord and spinal nerves. These messages tell your heart to beat, your lunges to breathe, your legs to walk, your body to sleep. The moving bones of your spinal column help to surround and protect the spinal cord and its nerves.

Anything from bending, twisting, lifting, turning, slips and falls or heavy exertion can cause the bones of the spine to irritate or kink the spinal cord or spinal nerves. This interference, or misalignment, can cause the message of the brain to be slowed down to the rest of the body resulting in frequent illness, colic, reflux, poor posture, tight muscles, headaches, fatigue, sleeplessness, numbness, tingling, or pain not only in the back, but in other parts of the body to where the nerves travel.

As a chiropractor, I gently move the bones back into place (the adjustment) and remove the interference on the nervous system so your body can go back to functioning the best way it knows how. You, as the patient, are also given an opportunity to help your body heal through at-home exercises and/or stretches, and given lifestyle advice.

Chiropractic works by finding the cause of your symptoms, then correcting them (sometimes with your help) rather than masking the symptoms and allowing the problem get worse. This helps reassure you that your body is healing and you can continue with a happy and active lifestyle.

The body is made to move in many directions and built to withstand wear and tear on the bones and muscles. However, this can eventually interfere with signals being sent by nerves to the rest of the body. Although the body has a great ability to heal itself from these daily stresses, it enjoys getting a tune up to make sure everything is functioning properly. Chiropractic adjustments keep your body aligned so it can keep the nervous system connected and turned on at optimal levels all of the time allowing you to function at a level to keep you healthy!

From the time we are born, our body goes through many changes. We experience many minor and major physical and emotional traumas, and these are stored in our nervous system, skeletal system and muscular system until one day they decide to start “talking” to us and making us feel fatigued, causing muscles to feel tight, joints to feel a ‘kink’, or some of us will have pain. Regular adjustments can help clear the body of some of these symptoms by finding the interference and clearing it so nerve signals and bodily movements can occur more comfortably allowing health to be restored.

Absolutely! Chiropractic care is safe for people of all ages ranging from newborns to seniors, and even pregnant women. Adjustments are gentle and vary greatly to suit the individual receiving the care. With the wide array of adjusting techniques out there, you can be sure to get the safest method available. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to the chiropractor before making your appointment, and don’t hesitate to do your research about different techniques, even if it means trying out a few different chiropractors to find one you are comfortable with.

Doctors of chiropractic go through several years of school and an extensive curriculum to learn about how the nervous system, skeletal system and muscular system allow the body to function and heal, as well as hands on training to learn a variety of techniques to make sure they can choose the safest one for each individual patient. Additionally, chiropractors are required to pass a rigorous series of national board exams before they can sit for their licensing exam. Once they receive their license, they are required to take re-licensing courses every year to help keep them up to speed on the current research and treatment techniques so they can continue to provide safe and gentle treatments for everyone.

An adjustment usually does not hurt. If you are in severe pain, the adjustment can feel uncomfortable in the beginning of your care. If you experience pain or are feeling apprehensive during the adjustment, be sure to let your chiropractor know so he or she can modify the treatment for you. The adjustment itself can be uncomfortable or painful if you are unable to maintain a state of relaxation during the treatment or unwilling to communicate with your doctor about what you are comfortable with.

Occasionally, you may experience mild soreness or more discomfort following your adjustments before you start to experience relief of your symptoms because chiropractic adjustments are reconnecting nerve signals and repositioning muscle and bone – each of which were most likely not working the way they should have been. While to body re-learns how to do things the way it’s supposed to, you’ll feel some discomfort or soreness, but you will also experience many other positive health benefits which will hopefully help you forget about your past pain. Remember, poor health didn’t happen overnight, so improving your health also takes time.

Definitely not! Chiropractic adjustments can be applied to just about any joint (where two bones connect with each other) in the body, such as the ribs, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, fingers, hips, knees, ankles, and toes. All of your nerves exit the spine and continue to branch out throughout the entire body. They branch out into smaller nerves which can travel through, and get trapped between, the other joints mentioned above, or entrapped between muscles surrounding those joints. Some examples of conditions in the extremities treated by chiropractic include: rotator cuff injuries; impingement syndrome of the shoulder; thoracic outlet syndrome; carpal tunnel of the wrist; sciatica; sprained ankles; hip pain; tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow; plantar fasciitis; sports injuries; etc.

When necessary, there are other forms of care I provide in addition to the adjustment. I do not perform traditional massage, but I perform my own style of soft tissue manipulation which includes combinations of deep tissue techniques, post-isometric relaxation, myofascial release techniques and stretching. I may incorporate electrical muscle stimulation (e-stim). I am also certified in level 1 kinesiology taping. I usually recommend simple, but important, home exercises to re-educate the posture muscles. All of these are great complements to the adjustment because they help reduce inflammation/swelling and pain; correct muscular imbalances; speed up the healing process of the body; and allow your health to improve.

Why does this have to sound so bad? Lifetime care for better health is something I choose to do every day by eating healthy foods, exercising regularly, laughing often, practicing yoga, finding healthy ways to decrease stress levels, and getting regular chiropractic care. It takes time, effort and patience to live a healthy life, but I do all of this because it makes me feel good, strong and healthy. I want to, and choose to, continue this experience for the rest of my life. By offering lifetime chiropractic care to you, I am giving you an opportunity to choose something great which you can add to your current lifestyle – whether you’re already practicing healthy habits or starting to improve your health. In the end, the decision is, and always will be, yours to make.
